4 wheels, a roof and even some windows !!
Suicide doors what more could you ever need, and in truth they were standard on this car but I think they are so cool I would give them a mention of their own here!!!
The 1930's were great years for French automobile design. Bugatti were building amazing art deco inspired coach built cars for the aristocracy and even the more main stream brands were being inivitive. Citroen had almost rewritten the book with the launch of the Traction Avant a car that was technically light years ahead of the competition despite its rather dower styling. Peugeot on the other hand used a more traditional rear wheel drive layout but were busy designing some of the most elegant streamlined vehicles available in Europe. The first of these models was the 402, it was larger than the Citroen and because of its backbone chassis they were able cheaply offer a massive range of body styles which meant that they could offer a vehicle for almost any occasion from a practical saloon to the world first convertible with a folding metal roof. Although it was a success Peugeot really needed a smaller car to compete with the Traction Avant. In 1936 they launched the 302. Effectively it was a scaled down version and proved massively popular. The model ran for just 2 years but during this time over 25,000 vehicles were produced. As with the 402 there were various body styles available including coupe and convertible versions
The quality of the paint is very good and probably far better than it was in 1936, I would be pretty certain that it is not all original, but it suits the car well and has many years of life left in it yet. The only marks to mention of are a couple of blisters on the roof area.
The wheels are all colour coded to the body and have a matching set of chrome hub caps which are all in good condition with little sign of pitting or surface corrosion. The wheels have all been shod in Michelin tyres as I am sure every self respecting French car would not consider wearing a foreign brand of any kind!
The engine is a little slow to start in this cold weather but when she does it appears mainly smoke free, and idles well. I have not taken her out on these icy roads yet so will report a little more when the weather clears up.
The interior is simply wonderful getting in is an occasion in it self with the beautiful curved suicide doors. Once inside the seats are typically french in that they are soft and comfortable. They whole interior has benefited from a recent re-trim in a gorgeous soft red corduroy and is in very good condition all round. The switchgear is very simple and elegant with one giant switch in the middle of the steering wheel which turns for all of the light settings and pushes for the horn which is a deafening klaxon style device. The best feature by far has to be the wind out front windows which I am just dying to use when the weather gets warm enough. There are two beautifully crafted chrome dials which you twist that force the bottom edges of each windscreen out to give you a flow of fresh air in to the cabin, brilliant.
Wow, what a great little car to drive. The three speed gearbox is easy to use and the steering light and precise. The interior is great. with deep and comfortable seats and plenty of space to fit four. The car cruises at around 50 MPH and feels quick up to it. and given that there is syncromesh on the gears so there is no need to double-de-clutch either. We are looking forward to some better weather and pottering around the country lanes in this one!
There is no supporting history with this car at the present. We have written to the previous owners to see if there is anything we can drum up, but the car comes with a fresh MOT, Service and we will have a full mechanical inspection taken out by an independent mechanic before it is delivered to its new owner.
