Model history

The MG Model B was produced from September 1962 until July 1980 at the Abingdon Works when the last MG B rolled off the production line. The Plant was closed by Margaret Thatcher as part of the British Government's Privatisation Plan.  When first released the 1798cc 4 Cylinder roadster weighed in at approximately  2,000 pounds with the engine producing nearly 100 BHP. The major changes over the MG A was the addition of electric overdrive as an option in 1963, and going from a 3 main bearing engine to a five bearing engine in 1964. Otherwise Abingdon met each new emission and safety requirement by bolting on new parts rather than redesign and retool the factory. Thus when the last car rolled off the production line in 1980 the car had gained 800 pounds, and the engine output had dropped to 62.5 BHP.  All in all 512, 243 MGB's rolled off the line at Abingdon, of which 386, 961 were roadsters, and 125, 282 were MGB GT's. More MGB's were sold than any other British car or any sports car in the world.  When all was said and done, the MGB proved to be a fun to drive sports car, that was easy to maintain, and inexpensive to own.

Exterior

Finished in Tartan Red this MGB has body shop fresh paint that has not a mark on it.  The shell is in fantastic condition without corrosion or nasty patches anywhere on the underside.  The chrome work is all in good shape and polishes up to a clean shine and is without pitting. She has been clear wax oiled underneath to protect the shell without covering up any bad finish!

Wheels Tyres and Brakes

The wire wheels are all in good condition and are clothed in a set of matching tyres which have approximately 6 mm of tread all round.  The brakes are discs at the front and drums at the rear, stopping these light early cars without any difficulty at all.

Engine and Transmission

The fully detailed engine bay houses the 1800cc engine that has been rebuilt a few years ago with a fast road cam giving a lively performance.  It starts quickly and cleanly and settles to an even idle as it warms through and the choke is pressed back into the dash.  It breaths through a set of twin 11/2" SU carbs with a performance air filter.  There is a Stainless Steel exhaust system and it sound great when you gun the throttle out of a bend.  The four speed gearbox is smooth and engages each gear with out fuss.

Interior and Equipment

Full Black Leather with deep pile black carpets.  As with the rest of this car the interior is in fantastic condition being totally refitted during its restoration.  What is rare is that the car has got its original MG steering wheel, most of these were removed and replaced with a far less pretty Mountney wheel.  The hood - as with all period MG's keeps out the worst of the weather, but will never be 100% water tight.  It is however all present and correct and in good order.

Road Test

This little B drives very nicely indeed. With the improvements to the engines breathing giving a little more power and a well set up chassis she makes great progress through the twisties without too much body roll.  I just can't wait for the summer, MG's , some good company and quiet country lanes make my summer!

History File

Originally sent out to California as a British Racing Green car this B was used sparingly in the USA and was brought home with just a little over 20,000 miles in 2004.  She was sold for restoration to a marque enthusiast who spent the next 2 years taking the car apart and rebuilding it to a good standard.  During this time the engine and transmission were removed for renovation and the car sent away to be painted in Tartan Red.  The car was put back together with many new items including trim, chrome, lights, hoses brakes etc all of which are documented in the history file.  Since coming into our possession we decided that she needed a small refresh and has been sent to our body shop C&N Customs to realign some of the body panels, repair some small marks that had occured and replace the front and rear suspension - a job that seemed to have been over looked during the original restoration.  She is no presented in fine condition ready to be used and enjoyed this summer.
