Model history

There must have been a moment in the mid nineties where the suits at Mercedes Benz sat in the board room and said 'The SL just isn't big or fast enough! Lets build something that will blow our customers minds!' In 1999 the CL was born.  It keeps all the finest of Mercedes traditions of being a high tech, comfortable and incredibly rapid way to cross continents.  Available with either a 5.0 litre V8 or 6.0 litre V12 for those who wanted grace and pace or AMG's amazing 5.5 litre hotrod V8 for those who wanted to announce their entrance with thunder from the exhaust pipes.  The model ran to 2006 before it was replaced with an even faster and more expensive version.

Exterior

Cars of this nature should look a million dollars and should not skulk around almost unnoticed.  Black cars are always the best way to make an entrance outside an expensive hotel and the colour complements the CL's graceful lines.  As you would expect for a late and low mileage example the paintwork is in great condition without blemish.   

Wheels Tyres and Brakes

This example is sporting a set of the standard equipment 18" 5 Spoke alloy wheels which are shod in matching Michelin tyres. They are all in good condition and have 5mm of tread all round.  The large calipers are painted silver and have 'Mercedes Benz' written on them.  Why can't BMW think to finish their calipers this way?  They look so much better! 

Engine and Transmission

The CL has quite possibly the smoothest and most refined engine in any road car and it effortlessly puts its power through Mercedes equally refined 6 speed automatic gearbox.  It is an engineering masterpiece and having been well serviced during its life is ready to enthrall its next owner for many thousands of miles yet.

Interior and Equipment

Opulent is the only word to describe the CL's interior!  There is nothing to want for.  There is all the equipment (that crucially all works and is in great condition) in the world.  The dash board is beautifully lit.  The Sat Nav and TV is intuitive and easy to use and it feels every bit a hundred thousand pound car.

Road Test

Supercars don't have to be cramped and compromised. The Mercedes CL is proof that you can also enjoy real world day-to-day practicality and comfort. Unlike most rivals, you can easily get four on board a CL. At the front, the seats are wonderfully comfortable and sophisticated, whilst the generous rear seats easily accommodate two adults. There's a lot of technology to keep the CL on the road at speed and it needs it, especially with the larger engines. The sporty character combines brilliantly with the sheer opulence of the interior and the high-tech fittings.  Cost issues should not bother most buyers as the lions share of the depreciation has already happened and you should appreciate that you are buying into high-roller high-performance luxury.
