The 993 Model was the last generation 911 to feature the air cooled engine, and hence retain the classic silhouette. It can trace its roots directly back to the first 911 of 1966, and yet has no difficulties exceeding the standards of all contemporary high performance sports cars. Porsche enthusiasts regard the 993 as the last true 911. By the end of its life span in 1998 the 993 had accounted for one fifth of all the 911's ever built.
This Midnight Blue Carrera 2 has been well looked after by its previous owners. It is very rare to find a Porsche that has not had a significant amount of paint over the years as dealers and owners like to make sure they always present well. The history of this car shows there are two points at which the car has been painted for stone chips. Back in 2001 the then owner had the front and rear bumpers painted along with the rear tailgate for 'chips and cosmetic damage' and the whole car machine polished. During the last owners time the car was delivered to Lancaster's Porsche Paint Shop where the front bumper and bonnet were painted for chips. There is nothing to suggest in the history or on physical inspection of the car that these repairs were for anything more sinister and the benefit is that the paint on this car looks like it belongs to a much younger car.
This car is fitted with a set of 17" Porsche Alloy Wheels, currently a couple of them have minor kerb marks but I am sure as the days progress our alloy wheel wizard will have refurbished them. As with all 993's this Porsche is fitted with ABS brakes. There is a nearly new set of Pirelli P Zero Tyres that have no damage or uneven ware patterns on them.
Being very well serviced the engine in this particlur 993 seems to be as sweet and strong as it was when it left Stuttgart. The Tiptronic Gearbox is a joy to use allowing swift and precise progress through the less congested roads and hassle free town driving. The car has been well serviced throughout its life and it is good to see that the last owner has spent good money on important maintenance such as sorting oil leaks before they became a problem.
As with the rest of this car the interior belies the 135,000 miles that this car has covered over the last 16 years. This car has never been off the road for a portion of time and generally has just covered 8 to 10,000 miles a year for its whole life. Often this is the very best way, combined with caring owners who look after and service the car well everything just keeps on working! The seats, carpet and electrics are all in good condition and our valeter has had an easy job getting this 993 ready for the photo's. It is just a very good car.
It always amazes me that Porsche manage to make an Automatic Gearbox work with such a focused sports car, but somehow this is the case. As soon as you fire up the engine and listen to that deep, slightly off beat engine ticking over at the very back of the car you realise that you are in for a very special drive out. Whether in Automatic or Tiptronic mode the 993 retains all of the poise and accuracy that has made it the benchmark Grand Tourer for all these years, its just that you don't have to much about with the clutch when you have to return to the city centre, where most of these great cars live! Possibly the best compromise available? Come and try for yourself.
