Model history

The 911 SC is the second evolution of the 930 series of the 911. Powered by the 3.0 litre engine the SC took the 911 from the graceful sports tourer of the 70's and turned it into a muscular and powerful sports car of the 80's. Standard equipment now included the 'Whale Tail' rear spoiler a deeper front chin spoiler and 16" Fuchs alloy wheels with painted centres and a chrome rim around the edge. The chrome was lost around the window edges and replaced with a mat black. The cloth interior trims became very 1980's with either pin stripe cloth or tartan to match the stock brokers suits. The SC ran until 1984 when Porsche launched the 3.2 Carrera.

Exterior

It is very easy to buy a mediocre SC and then spend more than you laid out on the car getting it to a reasonable standard.  For this reason you will be glad to know that this car has previously been owned by a marque enthusiast who has spent many hours and a lot of Sterling on getting this car to a great standard.  The car had a full bare metal re-spray in 2007 which has been done to a very high standard.  There are very few contaminants in the finish and the whole car has the luster of  a well looked after 3 year old car.  Finished in Grand Prix White with deep black bumper inserts, front valance and rear stone guards she looks great both from a distance and under close scrutiny.  We had an almost perfect Guard Red car earlier this year and it is easy to draw favourable comparisons between the two cars.

Wheels Tyres and Brakes

As with the rest of the car the Fuchs alloy wheels are in great condition.  They were refinished during the rebuild and have matching Grand Prix White centres.  The tyres are a matching set of Continental Sport Contacts with plus of 5mm on the front, and are brand new at the rear.  The brakes are in good condition with just the smallest of lips on the discs and with servo assisted brakes now being standard at this age stop the car very well indeed.

Engine and Transmission

Don't think that all the money has been spent on getting the body right at the expense of the drivetrain.  These 3.0 litre cars have a reputation for being very reliable but it is comforting to know that the history is solid and there are plenty of receipts to show that it has been well cared for and MOT's to back up the mileage.  The engine fires with a twist of the key and settles almost immediately to a constant idle (very rare for this vintage of Porsche's with out considerable expense) and pulls strongly through the rev range.  After a four hundred mile trip home there was not a drop of oil on our white studio floor when we came inspected her in the morning either.  Recent bills show that the clutch and prop links were replaced in February of this year and a sports exhaust was fitted six months ago.  The heat exchangers are just three years ago and seem to pump plenty of that heat into the cabin!  The 915 gearbox has a short throw gear stick and all gears engage cleanly and quickly.  You should also notice from the photographs that the engine bay has been detailed and looks just fantastic when you lift the rear tail.

Interior and Equipment

The interior is also in great condition and belies the 150,000 miles that this car has covered.  The sports seats are full of padding and the leather is not worn or damaged.  The blue carpets have plenty of pile left, even in the drivers foot well and come up well with a quick hover!  There is a good quality stereo set up with a Sony head unit , quality speakers and an electric wing mounted aeriel.  As with all cars of this age we find a few little issues to solve and there were some duff earths on the electrics which meant that our journey home was hampered by a lack of windscreen wipers and malfunctioning lights.  Still we have to do something for our money and a couple of hours with a meter and some of the 'wizards' patience have been rewarded with a perfectly functioning SC!

Road Test

The SC is a personal favourite of mine.  It manages to combine all the feel of the earlier cars with better dynamic ability and plenty of pace.  It is quiet and well mannered when loping across the countryside and provides hours of fun and excitement when the road conditions allow. The great thing about a well sorted 911 is that it is always ready for you to enjoy and has none of the usual set backs associated with more fragile classic cars and is the reason we put so much effort into finding good examples to sell.

History File

The history file is almost as thick as the London Yellow Pages!  Originally supplied by Maltin Cars in Henley on Thames, the service book is stamped though until it ran out of space in 1997 and 110,000 miles.  There is also a raft of MOT's covering the mileage from 1998 to the present day.  To go with this there are invoices covering this history as well as the restoration of the car.  In short service history does not get much better than this.  As with all our Porsche product she comes with an independent health check from Bob Watson Engineering which can be faxed across if necessary.
