None to speak of, but driving it home the other night really cheered me up!
Badge engineering was brought to many peoples attention in the late nineties when the VW group reinvented the idea with their VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda platform sharing program which meant that you could buy an expensive golf, a golf, a cheaper Golf and a very cheep golf depending on which badge you wanted on the front of your car, but the idea has been around for years, and the british motor industry were very keen on it. The Roots Group had four marques Hillman, Humber, Singer and Sunbeam and they all sold slightly different versions of the same basic car. The Hillman Minx was a series of middle-sized family cars produced between 1932 and 1970. There have been many versions of the Minx over the years, as well as various badge-engineered versions which were sold under the Humber, Singer, and Sunbeam marques. For most of the 1960s the Minx and its derivatives were the greatest-volume sellers of the "Audax" family of cars from Rootes Group which also included the slightly larger Super Minx, the Singer Gazelle and the Sunbeam Rapier.
This car belonged to one of our more sentimental clients, who having had the car in the family since it was brand new decided to treat the old girl to a restoration for his father birthday a few years ago. The work was carried out very carefully making sure that none of the cars originality was lost, but gave a great finish. The result is a car that looks and smells old with all the correct stickers still in place in the shut lines, but the structure is all sound and the outside paint and trim in very good condition. There are no rust bubbles and chrome work is also up to scratch.
Correct period steel wheels with chrome hub caps and a good set of matching tyres. As we get through our paint back log we will have these refinished as they just aren't quite as bright as the rest of the car and look a little out of place. The brakes are really good for a car of this age and weight and stop the car with out fuss giving plenty of feel even in the weather we are experiencing at the moment.
Whilst not the prettiest engine bay ever photographed the beating heart of the Super Minx is just that. Super. She starts from cold with just a pinch of choke and a twist of the key and warms through quickly and idles smoothly. There is a good turn of speed when on the road and the gears are positive and easy to engage.
The interior is all very original with black vinyl seats and door cards. There is a great ambience in here, the smell, driving position, space and visibility all hark back to days when car were less complicated and better fun. The black carpets have begun to sun bleach on the top of the transmission tunnel, but this just adds to the old world feel. There is plenty of space and this car would make a great Sunday toy to bring out and cheer up the whole family.
To say I was surprised by the Super Minx is an understatement, but then that is one of the best parts of this job, you try cars that you would never normally think about driving. Some disappoint and others leave a much better impression. There is plenty of room, great visibility and the 1725cc engine feels eager and punchy. I am sure there are plenty of shabby examples out there but this low mileage, low ownership car has been well loved and preserved by its last family and it deserves another loving home, so how about it?
The Super Minx has been owned by one family since it was brand new. She has been the subject of a £3,600 rebuild a few years ago and is in great condition having covered just a few hundred miles since. The majority of the service history for this car is with an elderly gentleman and we are doing our best to find every last scrap we can. For the moment recent MOT's and the current V5 are available but we are confident of being able to find the ret of the history, please call to find out more. She is to be sold serviced and with a new MOT.
