Launched in 1998 to replace the the 993 the 996 was the first clean sheet 911 to be designed since its inception over 40 years before. Designed by the wonderfully named Pinky Lai the air-cooled engine was replaced with a 4 valve per cylinder water cooled 6 cylinder boxter unit that puts out 320 BHP in standard trim. Available in three body styles, and 2 engine outputs the 996 was an instant hit with its refined and devastating performance. The facelift 996 was introduced in 2001 with clear headlamp and indicators freshening up the design.
This is a very clean example of a 996 indeed! The sun has been out today, and in the Autumn light it looks fantastic and has turned more than a few heads whilst it has been parked outside our barn waiting to be photographed. There are your usual collection of stone chips across the leading edge of the bonnet and lower front valance but generally the paint is deep, scratch and dent free and looks good for what is now and eleven year old car. Thanks to the fact that this car has a factory hard top the blue fabric roof is in good condition and works as it should. For those of you without prior experience of a Porsche hard top, they are quick and easy for two people to remove and weigh considerably less than the BMW or Mercedes equivalent!
The car has twist design 17" Porsche Alloy wheels which have all been recently re-finished and are clothed in a matching set of Continental Sports each with over 4mm of tread.
The 3.4 litre engine in the 996 is a very smooth unit but provides plenty of urge when required! The six speed gearbox is quick and the clutch light so it is both easy to drive round town and satisfying on the faster roads. This car has been well serviced by either OPC agents or well regarded specialists.
The 996 is a very civilised place to be. The seats hug you and all the controls come easily to hand. There are plenty of Porsche trade marks inside, the wonderful centre rev counter, seating position and vista over the bonnet have not changed, but the whole cabin has a much more complete feel than the 993 before it. It was designed to take all those new innovations and switches that just didn't exist back in the 1960's! There is an Alpine Navigation Unit and 6 CD Stack under the bonnet.
It always amazes me that Porsche manage to make focused sports car, with the engine in the rear be such a great and comfortable grand tourer, but somehow this is the case. As soon as you fire up the engine and listen to that deep, slightly off beat engine ticking over at the very back of the car you realise that you are in for a very special drive out.
