Standard Equipment

UK sport specification car with front air dam and rear whale tail spoiler, Bilstein Sport shock absorbers, and Sport seats. The car has electric windows and door mirrors, and a Blaupunkt radio cassette system.  Being the targa model, it has a removable semi rigid top which can be removed and stored in the boot when the weather gives the opportunity. This development of what used to be known in the UK as a Surrey Top really is one of the best solutions to al fresco driving that there is, giving most of the perceived advantages of a convertible, whilst the sturdy rear roll hoop helps maintain the rigidity of the bodyshell, the loss of which has always been regarded as the downside of enthusiastic convertible driving.

Additional Equipment

Grand Prix White with Black Pinstripe Cloth Interior, Black Carrera Sidewinders  and Black Painted/ Chrome Fuch Alloy Wheels.

Model history

The Carrera 3.0 has an interesting place in Porsche history, being effectively a narrow bodied, normally aspirated version of the recently introduced 911 turbo. During it's short production run (1976 / 1977) just 2564 Coupes were produced and it became the development bedrock for both the later 911 SC and 3.2 Carrera. The normally aspirated engine used Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection to 200 BHP at 6000 RPM. The Carrera 3.0 enjoyed quick steering, taut handling with front and rear anti-roll bars and larger brakes to help cope with the extra power. During the last year of production the final J-Series cars were offered with either 'comfort' and 'sport' packs. The comfort pack had a classic spoiler-less silhouette with Koni dampers and 6 and 7 inch Cookie Cutter alloy wheels. The Sport was a racier affair with Bilstein dampers, bigger Fuchs alloy wheels sporting Pirelli P7 tyres, sports seats, front lip spoiler and the whale-tail spoiler.

Exterior

Very well presented in it's original Grand Prix White with contrasting Black targa hoop, glass frames, rubber mouldings and Carrera sidewinders.  The body is good condition with no major dents or scratches to report.  There is a small collection of stone chips along the leading edge of the bonnet and on the lower valance but nothing that detracts from the over all quality of the car. The paintwork and body are simply as good as you could ever hope for on a car of this age!

Wheels Tyres and Brakes

Original 16 inch Fuchs alloy wheels fitted with very good ContiSport Contact tyres, 205 55 fronts and 225 50 rears.  The brakes are strong and pull the car up quickly and evenly.

Engine and Transmission

These wonderful engines were very powerful in 1977 making 200 BHP and make a fantastic noise as they spin up to 6,000 RPM. Once you have got the period immobiliser to unset she starts with a quick flick of the key and settles down to an even idle as she warms up. The engine feels strong without signs of smoke from the exhaust. The 915 5 Speed Gearbox engages all gears without fuss and there is no unwanted slip from the clutch during acceleration. All in all this car has a nicely maintained engine and drive train.

Interior and Equipment

The interior is in good condition and is free from rips and tears. All the dials and equipment on board are in working order and the Targa top fits well as there is no excessive road noise at speed and she seems to have dealt with the odd heavy summer shower without leaks!

Road Test

As with all Carrera 3s - and indeed most 3 litre 911s - this car performs very well. The engine develops plenty of torque, and more than sufficient power to allow you to either trundle around at relatively low revs enjoying the sunshine and scenery, or alternatively you can press on, easily mixing it with modern traffic, despite the fact that the car is over 30 years old.

History File

All MOTs from 1990 onwards which would appear to verify the low mileage. Top end engine rebuild in 1990, along with clutch change (56938 miles). Major service carried out in May 2009 by RSR Engineering (69382 miles).
