Model History

The E30 3 Series was launched in 1982 and ran through to 1991 when it was superseded by the E36. Available with 2 four cylinder engines, the 316 and 318 and 2 6 cylinder engines, the 320 and 325 there was a combination of economy and performance to suit everyone. Hailed as the best handling sport saloon of the time BMW wasted no time in offering 4 different body shapes to bring the widest audience yet to the brand. During its 9 year life the E30 underwent huge development and spurned many of the performance models we now take for granted in the range including the Coupe, Convertible, Sport and M Cars. These versions gave the brand such huge credibility with there combination of luxury, quality and unrivaled performance and sent them on their way to become the most prolific and successful independent manufacturers in the world.

Exterior

The body on this E30 320i Convertible is in very good condition.  We have checked the underside, arches, scuttle and other trouble spots and found  no signs of structural or cosmetic corrosion to worry about.  We know that the car has had some remedial paint work, but this is done to a very high standard and very difficult to spot.  The chrome trim, bumpers, mounts and lights are also in good condition and belie the cars age and mileage.  She has responded very well to a day in Dan’s valeting bay and looks just as stunning in the metal as she does in these pictures!

Wheels, Tyres and Brakes

The car is fitted with a set of genuine 15 inch original equipment BBS alloy wheels. There are a few small kerb marks, but they are straight and true which is getting increasingly difficult to find now.  The car is fitted with good tyres.  The fronts have 5mm of tread, and we have just replaced the rears which had seen better days.  The brakes are discs all round with ABS.  the friction components are all in good condition and we have replaced the brake fluid during its preparation service.

Engine and Transmission

The 2 litre straight six is not one of there most powerful units BMW have ever built but it is strong and ultra smooth. Over the last 10 years we have seen many of these engines make it past a quarter of a million miles only requiring regular oil changes and the odd belt. The Automatic Gearbox is smooth and changes willingly, but this set up is for comfortable cruising and not for blatting down country lanes!  This car has a massive service history file and we replaced the cylinder head when we supplied it to its last owner 2 years ago. So there is little to worry about under the bonnet.

Interior

The black leather sports seats are amongst the most comfortable BMW have ever made and supply enough adjustment for a 5 footer or a 6.6 footer!  The interiors of an E30 are basic, very well made and beautifully laid out.  This one is no exception to the rule and is still in good condition some 24 years after it left the factory.

Road Test

These sharp convertibles are perfect daily drivers. They come from an age when the basics of motoring, steering, performance, and dynamics had been totally refined and all the electronic interference of the 2000′s had not been thought of. This is basic open-air motoring at its very best.

History File

There is a massive history file for this car, including an original book pack, stamped service book and thick wallet of invoices and MOT’s.  We supplied it two years ago to a good friend who has used her as his daily wheels only moving it on to accommodate his new dog!  We have undertaken a big service including fluid changes, brake overhaul, and many suspension rubbers and hoses to help maintain her 100% reliability record whilst in our care!  if you are looking for a stylish convertible that will look after you on a long run just as well as short trips around town an E30 needs to be close to the top of your list!
